During 2007 the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) conducted an independent review of Council’s Electoral Representation.
In conducting the review the VEC looked at:
- What is an appropriate number of Councillors for the municipality;
- Whether the municipality should have Wards or be unsubdivided; and
- If the municipality is to have Wards, how many Wards there should be, the number of Councillors per Ward and the Ward boundaries.
After completing the process the VEC recommended that the Swan Hill Rural City Council consist of seven Councillors to be elected from One 4-Councillor Ward and Three Single-Councillor Wards.
The Minister for Local Government, Richard Wynne MP, accepted the recommended changes and the order was approved by the Governor on 7 November 2007.
The changes will be in place for the November 2008 Local Government Elections.
The changes signal a new era for the Swan Hill Rural City Council, and together with the Officers, the seven elected Councillors in November 2008, will have the opportunity to continue to lead the community to address opportunities and challenges.
