The Stages Of A Council Decision

  • Agenda setting - issues important to the community are prioritised
  • Information gathering –  research, information gathering (including community consultation) and Council officer reports are collated.
  • Opinion formation – Councillors assess whether they have the information they need to form an informed opinion on issues.  Councillor briefings can be a key part of this process.
  • Decision making – A decision requires responsible chairing, participation and debate at the Council meeting
  • Implementation – Implementation should occur in a timely manner.  Understandings need to be developed on acceptance of decisions and management of dissent.
