The Swan Hill region’s heritage and history will be the focus this August when the inaugural Pioneers Week is celebrated throughout the community.
Food and wine, music and dance, sport and, of course, history will all play a part in this exciting week, with something for everyone.
Swan Hill Rural City Council Mayor Cr Gary Norton said Pioneers Week was a great time to visit the Swan Hill region.
“There will be plenty of highlights for visitors to our region during Pioneers Week,” Cr Norton said.
“Whether its enjoying a pioneer-themed race day, watching our Council re-enact a meeting from 100 years ago, watching local identities in The Great Debate or observing Better Homes and Garden chef “Fast” Ed Halmagyi whipping up a feast from local produce, there will be plenty of entertainment on offer.”
Those planning a weekend trip to the Swan Hill region will not be disappointed, with a busy weekend full of activities and fun to be had.
Saturday the 16 August will include a Grand Street Parade down the main street of Swan Hill, Pioneer Settlement Activation Day (featuring a full day of activities including kid’s games, Morris Dancers, tractor demonstrations and music), Pioneers Bush Dinner Dance, Tyntynder Homestead tours and Back in Time with Aussie Rules.
Sunday, the final day of Pioneers Week, will again be a great day out for the family, with the winners of The Great Swan Hill Scone Bake-Off to be announced (coinciding with the CWA’s 80th anniversary exhibition launch), the Culinary Showcase with Ed Halmagyi (as well as the region’s up and coming chefs demonstrating their skills alongside Ed), old-time Pyap cruises and historic cemetery tour.
A number of other activities will also be on during the week including shearing demonstrations and fine wool shed tours, the monster petition project, Pioneers exhibition and much more.
