Media Release

Thursday, 17 September

The potential for the Nyah District to host night series games for sports such as cricket and football is one step closer, after a meeting of the Nyah Recreation Reserve Focus Group was held on Thursday, 11 September.

The focus group have been working hard to determine priorities and short term outcomes for the Reserve and have been working closely with councils Community Facilitation Manager, Steve Matthews to scope the project and  look at potential funding.

Mr Matthews has described the project to relocate the light towers to cater for night sports and activities at the Reserve as one that has great potential.

‘The project to relocate the light towers will give the Reserve the capacity to host night sporting and community attractions in the district, so it's certainly a worthwhile project and is one that is highly achievable within a short time frame'.

The project of redeveloping the facilities will also see the focus group evaluating the need to have gym facilities at the Reserve.

The next step will be a survey being distributed to the residents of the Nyah District, to identify the potential for future facilities to be set up at the Recreation Reserve.

The focus group believe that a gym at the Recreation Reserve would be of benefit to the residents, community and sporting groups of the Nyah District. Currently they have to travel to Swan Hill or otherwise do not have the opportunity to access a gym and fitness programs.

The focus group is still concentrating on developing the economic benefits the Reserve has on the town and is looking towards making the Reserve facilities better suited for holding conferences and community events.

The kitchen and bar upgrades have been a high priority in discussions over the past few months as it is felt that upgrading them would allow the facilities to be better utilised. The group is looking towards developing an overall upgrade plan over the coming months for the kitchen and bar upgrades.

Working with the council, the focus group is continuing their efforts in determining funding sources and concepts to ensure the sustainability of the Reserve.
