The Swan Hill Regional Library provides services to the second-largest area in Victoria, via a main branch library in Swan Hill, a mobile library service, and 3 branches in neighbouring Wakool Shire (NSW).  The friendly local staff with over 80 years of combined library experience welcome you to visit and join the service.

The service officially began in 1958, and the first country mobile library service in Victoria began in the region in 1960. The Library enjoys a membership of over 35%, and has an average of 300 visitors per day, so please come along and have a look at the wide range of services available.

These services include:

Free membership for residents in the municipalities serviced; the friendly staff are more than happy to explain all of the benefits of membership, and will do their best to find out how the Library can assist you in finding information for your recreational, educational and personal improvement needs.  Each time you borrow items, you are also provided with a docket listing the items borrowed, their due date for return and contact information for the Library.

The service features a collection for loan of over 85,000 items including books, magazines, DVD's, videos, music CD's and specialised items such as video training kits.

The catalogue of all items for loan in the collection is available online, and can be searched from the comfort of home by clicking here

Internet access is available, and remains very popular, with 6 computers for public access.  Please book a time - please note there are policies in place to protect our younger users, and some fees do apply if you are not a member, but the Library staff will happily explain this before you first use the facilities.

Other services and features in the Swan Hill branch include a well-utilised meeting room, dedicated children's area featuring Saturday Storytime and craft activities, word processing computer, Local History collection and research room, toilets with baby-changing facilities, and access to the interlibrary loan network to provide titles from other libraries on request.  Naturally there are also plenty of comfortable chairs located throughout the building in which you can have a break during a long day down the main street.  The Library also offers a Home Library Service for those unable to visit the facilities personally - please contact the Library for more information.

Several community groups also use the Library, and provide additional services to visitors - the Swan Hill Genealogical and Historical Society has their research room based here, and provides volunteers to assist with family history investigation.  The Swan Hill Community Toy Library has also recently moved into the building, and the Mallee Oral History Group and Swan Hill U3A are also based in the facility.

Some of the wonderful volunteers.
The Library also has a large, dedicated and resourceful group of volunteers who greatly assist the staff by helping with Storytime, Home Library Service deliveries and Local History work.  If you are interested in volunteering at the Library, please call (03) 5036 2480 or simply visit the Campbell Street branch and ask any of the staff.
