State Government legislation requires Councils to register and control cats and dogs over three (3) months of age. Consequently, if you are the owner of any cats or dogs over three (3) months of age, they must all be microchipped and registered with Council.
The registration of any dog/cat is subject to compliance with the Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animal Act 1994. Council's Local Laws restrict the number of dog/cats permitted to be kept in residential zones to two (2) each without Council permission. A permit must be obtained from Council if you wish to have more than the number of allowed animals at your property/premises.
The fee set by Council to register a dog or cat is $120.00 per animal per year.
However, from 1 May 2007, all dogs and cats are required to be implanted with microchip before Council can accept the registration. The registration fee for microchipped dogs and cats is reduced to $40.00 per animal or $20.00 for owners who hold an eligible pension card.
Eligible pension cards are Centrelink Pensioner Card or Repatriation Health Card.
The fee for dogs kept for working livestock e.g cattle, sheep, horses, swine, goats and deer is $20.00.
Fines apply for animals found wandering at large by Council's Authorised Officers. Fees for a dog at large is $175.00 and a cat is $58.00. Pound release fees are $40.00 per animal plus $6.50 per day sustenance.
If you are uncertain what you have to pay, or require further information, please telephone Council's Authorised Officers direct on 5036 2346.
