The ongoing drought has had a significant cumulative impact on the Swan Hill Municipality. Its devastating consequences not only effects our rural sector, but also our local businesses, families, individuals and community as a whole throughout the region.
The Swan Hill Rural City Council has identified the severity of these circumstance and has placed great importance in reducing the effects of this prolonged drought.
Council has employed a Community Development Officer, Nathan Keighran, who undertakes and coordinates drought related issues and chairs the Drought Advisory Group (DAG).
The DAG is a committee which consists of representatives from a broad sector of the community, including Council employees, Health Services, Government and Welfare Agencies, Volunteers and Local Committee members that meet once a month to share information and ideas. The main aim of the group is to work in partnership to strengthen our community’s resilience, health and wellbeing and maintain social connectedness during sustained periods of drought.
Under the auspice of the DAG, the Drought Social Response and Recovery Plan 2008-2013 is being completed. The plan, funded by Swan Hill Rural City Council and Southern Mallee Primary Care Partnership, provides a detailed report and identifies real issues that the prolonged drought is having on our community. These issues have been classified into four main actions, including Healthy Social Network, Farm Support and Advice, Emergency Assistance and Support for Individuals, Children, Youth & Families.
Implementing these actions in a coordinated and detailed approach will hopefully utilise our community resources which in turn will strengthen our social resilience, health and well being and maintain social connectedness during these difficult times.
