Council provides domestic garbage and recyclable collection services to urban areas of Swan Hill, Woorinen, Woorinen South, Beverford, Robinvale, Nyah, Nyah West, Lake Boga, Ultima, Boundary Bend, Wood Wood, Managatang and Piangil.

Kerbside waste collection is provided weekly and a recycling service is provided fortnightly.  A 240 litre mobile bin (yellow lid) is provided for recycling and residents can choose to have either a 120 litre or a 240 litre mobile bin (red lid) for garbage collection.

An optional green waste kerbside collection service is available to residents of Swan Hill.

Council reminds residents not to overfill their bins when putting them out for collection. Please make sure your bin lid is closed and no garbage bags left beside your bins.

The best way to avoid overfilling garbage bins is to try and reduce the amount of household waste going into the bin. Go to the Support Services, Initiatives & Programs section in this website to see how you can Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Collection Days

The municipality is divided into ‘waste collection districts' for collection days of household garbage and recycling.

Rural areas are based on the following program:

Monday – Murray Valley Highway (Swan Hill to Lake Boga); Lake Boga; Tresco and Ultima

Tuesday – Robinvale; Boundary Bend; Piangil and Manangatang

Thursday – Tyntynder Flats; Beverford; Murrawee; Woorinen Township and Woorinen North.

Friday – Nyah and Nyah West

Swan Hill Township Garbage and Recycling collection is broken into four waste collection districts and is collected over four days.

Garbage Bin Charges

Every property within the designated garbage service collection area, that has a habitable dwelling on the property, must pay a garbage collection charge. The charges are itemised in resident's Rate Notices as following for the 2011/2012 financial year:

240 litre bin - $380.00

120 litre bin - $250.00

Payment of the charge also entitles the ratepayer to a 240 litre recycle bin.

Bins remain the ownership of Swan Hill Rural City Council, with bin serial numbers recorded for each property.  Requests for second bins and bins for Commercial properties are handled by Council's Contractor, Ellwaste.

Anyone wishing to change from a 120 litre bin to a 240 litre bin is required to pay a change over surcharge fee of $55.00. Anyone wishing to change from a 240 litre bin to 120 litre bin does not pay the surcharge fee as this has been waived by Council.

An application form Garbage Collection Service Application is available for this purpose, as well as requests for new services, stolen bins and maintenance requirements.

For further information please contact the Swan Hill Rural City Council on 5036 2333.

Commercial Garbage Collection

Council does not provide garbage or recycling collection services for commercial or industrial premises.  There are a number of businesses that collect commercial and industrial waste within the municipality.

Hard Waste Collections

Swan Hill Rural City Council currently provides free hard waste collections at various times to residents in areas where landfill operation hours are limited. This collection requires manual collection using loaders for heavier objects by Council's landfill contractors Ellwaste. For more information please contact Council's Waste Management Department on 5036 2401.

Recycling

All residents that are provided with a garbage collection are also supplied with a 240 litre mobile garbage bin for recycling, which is collected fortnightly on the same day as your garbage collection.

For your area's Recycle Week collection calendar, click here - May, June, July.

Materials recovered through the recycling kerbside collection include:

  • Steel and aluminium cans
  • Glass (bottles and jars)
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plastic codes 1 to 7
  • Liquid paperboard (milk cartons)
  • Newspapers, phone books, advertising materials

Don't forget to rinse out your recyclable products and place your recyclables in your recycle bin loosely and not in a plastic bag.

The kerbside recycling collected is taken to the transfer station operated by Ellwaste at 172 Gray Street, Swan Hill.

Two drop-off points are available for residents to dispose of their recyclable waste, either at the Recycle Transfer Station (172 Gray Street, Swan Hill) or at Swan Hill Landfill (Sea Lake - Swan Hill Road, Swan Hill) where recycling cages have been provided.

Optional Green Waste Collection Service

An optional residential green waste kerbside collection service is available for residents within the Swan Hill township.

The annual cost of the service is $125.00 and is charged through your rates.

Residents who elect to receive this service will be supplied with a 240 litre mobile bin (green lid) which is collected once a fortnight on a Thursday.

The green waste collection in Swan Hill is separated into two zones:

  • North Zone is the area of Swan Hill north of McCallum Street

For your green waste collection calendar click here - North Zone - South Zone

Please note that ONLY the following items can be placed in your green waste bin:
