Local contractor Whitfield Excavations will start next work week to improve stormwater drainage from the Swan Hill CBD.
Over three months, a new drainage main – up to 1200mm in diameter – will be installed along the north side of McCallum Street from the NAB building to the Swan Hill Bowling Club, under the train line and then to the river.
Council’s Director Infrastructure Oliver McNulty said the work would continue the upgrade that started in 2013.
“This upgrade is aimed at reducing the impact on businesses during heavy rainfall. It will increase the system’s capacity to drain stormwater to the river, and ultimately reduce the likelihood of CBD flooding,” he said.
Traffic diversions will be in place during construction, and any road closures will be advertised in local media and on Council’s website.
The upgrade is expected to be complete by December 2017, weather permitting.
The third and final stage of the upgrade will be completed as budget becomes available.
