Our Place concepts, site options out for comment

The community is being asked to have a say on site options and new concept building designs for the Our Place building in Swan Hill.

Our Place will be home to Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery, visitor services, the Pioneer Settlement entrance and a new Aboriginal cultural experience.

Since February, Swan Hill Rural City Council’s Our Place team has been working on feasibility for two site options, as well as concept building designs. The two sites being considered are:

  • Site option 1 – Inside the Pioneer Settlement, north of the PS Gem and near to where the rose garden and locomotive are currently located.
  • Site option 2 – Outside the Pioneer Settlement, south of the PS Gem and in the area where the Art Gallery, Spoons Riverside and associated car parks are currently located.

Mayor Bill Moar said Council had worked hard to understand and take into account community views when putting this new set of site plans and concepts together.

“The community clearly asked for us to investigate an alternative site option, and to make the building design more sympathetic to the surrounds. We hope that we have achieved both these things with these new options,” he said.

“Now we want to know what you think – tell us what you want this new building to look like, what you want it to achieve for our region, which of the two locations gives the best outcomes, what you like about the new concept designs.

“All opinions matter and will all help Councillors to make a final decision on where to build Our Place.”

Cr Moar said the consultation process would be different to previous processes but would still offer plenty of ways to have a say.

“Given social distancing requirements, we thought it was responsible to keep this consultation online and over the phone,” he said.

“Having said that, it is important that everyone who wants to have a say can have a say. If you or someone you know doesn’t have internet access, or doesn’t feel comfortable using the internet to view plans and designs, please give Council a call and we will make sure you can be involved.”

This consultation phase will be open until 5pm on 1 June.

Community feedback will be collated and shared with Councillors, who are expected to make a final decision on the location in July. Once a decision has been made on the location, the Our Place team will work closely with the architects and builders to develop the detailed design.
