On 24 October this year, locals will have the opportunity to elect Councillors they think would best represent the municipality.
Candidates for the election must lodge their application with the Victorian Electoral Commission by 12 noon on Tuesday 22 September 2020.
Prior to nominating all candidates must undertake Mandatory Training run by the State Government.
The Victorian Electoral Commission will be available from Wednesday 16 September to assist potential candidates through the nomination process.
A dedicated website – www.standforcouncil.com.au – has been launched through the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), where candidates can check their eligibility to stand for Council and find out more.
The website is also holding online Community and Candidate Information sessions. The sessions will provide community members and potential candidates with information about the role and purpose of local government, responsibilities and expectations of a Councillor and the electoral process.
An online Community and Candidate Information Session for Swan Hill Rural City Council will be held on Wednesday, 19 August from 10am to 12pm.
To register, visit www.viccouncils.asn.au/stand-for-council/community-and-candidate-information-sessions and scroll down to the session for Swan Hill Rural City Council.
These MAV sessions are different from the Mandatory Candidate Training sessions run by the State Government through Local Government Victoria.
Swan Hill Rural City Council Chief Executive Officer John McLinden said deciding to stand for Council was a big decision.
“I recommend potential candidates inform themselves as much as possible via the mandatory and optional online information sessions,” Mr McLinden said.
“With COVID-19 restrictions, campaigning for community support will be quite different this year.
“Training will provide potential candidates with advice on safe campaigning in the lead up to the October elections,” he added
The election will be conducted via post between 6 October and 23 October, with results declared by Friday, 13 November.
