Young Person Leading Change – winner announced

Swan Hill Rural City Council was delighted this week to learn that their very own Will Burns, Youth Support Officer had won the 2022 YACVic Rural Youth Award for ‘Young Person Leading Change’, at a presentation held in Bendigo on Tuesday.

YACVic Rural Youth Awards aim to promote the incredible work, stories and achievements of young people, and youth sector, in rural and regional Victoria.

Will Burns was nominated earlier this year for leading reproductive sexual health and consent education, a program he put together and helped deliver during the peak of COVID-19 lockdowns.

Will Burns, Youth Support Officer and winner of the award said he was thankful for the opportunity given by YACVic to be recognised for his contribution to youth in the region.

“I’m thankful for YACVic for not only recognising my work, but highlighting the outstanding work of others in and around rural Victoria,” he said.

“I also couldn’t have got the program off the ground without the help of all the young people who came together and helped to identify gaps in the reproductive sexual health and consent space.”

Mr Burns added that he was part of an incredibly supportive and forward-thinking group of individuals in the Youth Support Team, and for that he was grateful.

Jess Kei, Youth Support Officer based in Robinvale also received a nomination in the same category for her dedicated work in reinvigorating the Robinvale Youth Group.
