Swan Hill Library is proud to bring back the Be Connected Young Mentors Program, a transformative initiative that helps older Australians build digital confidence while fostering meaningful connections across generations.

This year, the program is powered by Year 12 students from Swan Hill College, led by teacher Stephanie Kiel and library staff, who will guide older participants through engaging, one-on-one mentoring sessions.

Libraries Manager Camille Cullinan said the program equips older residents with essential digital skills while providing young people with valuable mentoring and leadership experience.

“The Young Mentors Program is about so much more than technology—it’s about connection, confidence, and mutual learning,” Ms Cullinan said.

“Older participants will get hands-on experience with everyday digital tasks, from using mobile phones, tablets, and computers, to sending emails, making video calls, navigating Google Maps, and more.”

Mentors will undergo tailored training to ensure sessions are welcoming, fun, and supportive, making learning an enjoyable experience for all involved.

“We encourage older residents to bring their own devices so they can practice skills directly on what they use at home,” Ms Cullinan said.

“At the same time, young mentors gain vital skills in communication, empathy, and leadership—making this a fantastic opportunity for both groups.”

The program kicks off on Thursday, 8th May, running weekly for six consecutive weeks, with sessions starting at 11:30am.

Older residents interested in joining can register their interest now by calling the Swan Hill Regional Library at 5036 2480.

Don’t miss this chance to learn, connect, and grow together!
