Apply for a building permit
Not every construction project needs a building permit. See our list of common building projects to determine if you may need a permit.
To apply for a building permit, you will need to engage a private building surveyor. Swan Hill Rural City Council no longer issues building permits.
If any aspect of your design changes, or there is a change to your builder or practitioner details, you must apply to amend your building permit.
If you are unable to commence or complete works within the timeframe specified on your building permit, you must apply for an extension of time before the permit expires.
Your building permit will specify whether you require either an occupancy permit or a certificate of final inspection before you occupy the building.
For a fee, any person can request property information under Regulations 51(1), (2) and (3) of the Building Regulations 2018.
Report and Consent (dispensation) is the process for consulting with and obtaining the approval when building work may affect assets, infrastructure or amenity of the community.
To find the legal point of discharge (where stormwater from your property discharges into a Council managed drain or the street kerb and channel) and other drainage information you will need to apply.
For a fee, property owners or other third parties (with the owners written consent) can request copies of building plans, certificates, and permits etc.
If you are holding an event in a location not deemed to be normal practice this area is classed as a Place of Public Entertainment (POPE).
If you are a private building surveyor, you can submit a Section 80, Section 30 and a section 73 using our online portal.
If you intend to build any sort of structure over a drainage easement, you may need to apply for consent from Council first.
