A petition is a written request to Council, signed by many people, that raises a concern and asks Council to take action.
Before submitting a petition, we encourage you to read the Swan Hill Rural City Council Governance Rules and Guidance Notes to ensure your petition is deemed valid and will be accepted by Council.
What happens next?
Once you submit your petition, it will go to the next meeting of Council where it is formally received and acknowledged. The purpose of the petition will be recorded in the minutes of that meeting.
If the petition relates to an operational matter, this will be referred to the Chief Executive Officer for action and response.
Council may resolve that a written report be prepared for presentation at a future Council meeting or that the petition be considered in conjunction with an item on the agenda.
All correspondence in relation to the petition will be sent to the head petitioner. It is the head petitioner’s responsibility to update other petitioners in relation to the matter.
