This week, the local First Nations youth-led Marruk Project invites all community members to join them in forming a choir in preparation for the upcoming Shared Connections event. This choir will perform at the event, which will be held at the Riverside Park, Swan Hill on Sunday, 26 January at 6pm.

The award-winning Marruk Project is a youth theatre initiative born in the Mallee in 2009 and uses performing arts to strengthen culture and create opportunities for Elders, young people and community members to get to know each other by sharing their histories.

Council’s Mayor, Cr Stuart King encourages everyone to get behind the Marruk Project’s initiative and be a part of something that is both meaningful and uplifting.

“This choir is an opportunity for us all to come together to showcase the diverse voices that make our community both welcoming and unique,” Cr King said.

The Marruk Project is calling community members from all walks and stages of life to join in performing two specially chosen songs: The Future Anthem, created by a talented group of artists including Judith Durham, Kutcha Edwards, Lou Bennett, Camilla Chance, and Bill Hauntz; and John Williamson’s song A Thousand Feet.

The Future Anthem is a revised version of Advanced Australian Fair, created to be more inclusive and representative of all Australians. A Thousand Feet is a heartfelt tribute to Australia’s landscape and rich history, celebrating all living beings that have walked on this land.

“Through song, we can come together to create the peaceful sounds of unity. I congratulate the organisers behind this wonderful idea and I hope as many people as possible will support them,” added Cr King.

Rehearsals will take place Thursday, 9 January, Sunday, 19 January and Wednesday, 22 January. All rehearsals will commence at 10am and will take place at the Swan Hill Town Hall.

Eager participants may choose to participate in one or more of the rehearsals, or lyrics will be provided for those wanting to join in on the day.
