Swan Hill Rural City Council is pleased to announce a significant advancement in Swan Hill’s riverfront revitalisation efforts. The Victorian Government has approved a key amendment to the Swan Hill Planning Scheme, facilitating the transformation of the former GrainCorp site at 42 Monash Drive.
Council’s Mayor, Cr Stuart King said the strategic rezoning from Transport Zone 1 to Commercial 1 Zone would open the door to diverse development opportunities, aligning with the long-term vision outlined in the Swan Hill Riverfront Masterplan.
“This rezoning is a pivotal step in implementing the Swan Hill Riverfront Masterplan, which aims to rejuvenate the riverfront precinct by enhancing its social, environmental, cultural, and economic values.
“The transformation of the underutilised GrainCorp site into a vibrant, mixed-use area is expected to attract new businesses and investment, boosting local tourism and economic growth,” he said.
Cr Stuart King emphasised the profound impact of the approval and its importance in shaping Swan Hill’s future.
"We are delighted with this outcome, which unlocks the potential of one of Swan Hill’s most iconic locations. This rezoning allows for new commercial opportunities, which include accommodation development, that will bring more life, activity, and economic growth to our riverfront precinct,” Cr King added.
Cr King said Council remained committed to guiding quality design and appropriate development, preserving the unique identity of the riverfront while fostering innovation and growth.
“This development is part of a broader initiative to activate the Swan Hill Riverfront Precinct, which has already seen the completion of projects like our Skate Park, Adventure Playground, and the Monash Drive Boardwalk and Viewing Platform, along with the Swan Hill Tourism and Cultural Hub, Art Gallery and Ten Steps redevelopment currently underway.
“These enhancements are transforming our riverfront into a contemporary and vibrant community space, celebrating the best of Swan Hill’s Riverfront precinct,” Cr King said. “We also remain committed to improving connectivity from the CBD to the riverfront and continue to work closely with the Department of Transport and Planning to create a mutually acceptable solution.”
Cr King acknowledged the vision of previous Councillors and the persistence of Councillors and staff over a number of years to get to this point enabling an exciting future development.
