Mosquitoes

Council has a management program to monitor and control the mosquito population in our region. Mosquito control is important as some species carry diseases that can make you sick, such as:

Murray Valley Encephalitis
Japanese Encephalitis
Ross River Fever
Barmah Forest viruses

What we are doing

Council’s mosquito management program involves monitoring and identifying major breeding locations.

The program operates from November to April each year, but this may vary depending on the need.

What you can do

To protect you and your family from mosquito-borne diseases:

Get vaccinated against Japanese Encephalitis – Book in for vaccination with Council’s Immunisation Team or your doctor
Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing when outdoors
Use mosquito repellents containing DEET or picaridin on exposed skin
Try to limit outdoor activity if lots of mosquitoes are about (usually dusk and dawn)
Make sure there is no stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed around your home
Make sure your house has mosquito netting or screens
For children, it is safer to spray or rub insect repellent on their clothes rather than directly onto their skin
