The community is invited to celebrate a remarkable milestone in river history, with a special afternoon tea on Wednesday, 17 June, marking the 150th birthday of the iconic Pioneer Settlement paddle steamer, the PS Gem.

Known as the “Queen of the Murray”, the PS Gem was built in Moama in 1876 and has lived a colourful and fascinating life travelling the Murray River system before finding its permanent home at Pioneer Settlement in Swan Hill.

Mayor Cr Stuart King said the anniversary was an important opportunity to celebrate one of the region’s most treasured historic attractions.

“The PS Gem is an iconic part of our river heritage and an important piece of the Pioneer Settlement story,” Cr King said.

“For 150 years, the Gem has captured the imagination of visitors and locals alike, and we are proud to celebrate this incredible milestone with the community.”

Originally built for river trade and passenger service, the Gem was famously cut in half by hand and extended during upgrades in Goolwa in the 1880s. Throughout her working life, she transported cargo and passengers along the Murray, before eventually making the long journey to Swan Hill in 1962 - a voyage expected to take 10 days but which ultimately stretched to eight months due to low river levels.

Today, restoration works are underway to help return the PS Gem to her former glory, at her current resting place, ahead of her 150th celebrations.

Director Development and Planning Michelle Grainger said the morning tea would provide an opportunity for the community to reflect on the vessel’s extraordinary history.

“The PS Gem has played many roles over the years - from passenger vessel to restaurant and museum entrance - and remains one of the most recognisable paddle steamers on the Murray,” Ms Grainger said.

“We encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the celebrations and take the opportunity to explore all three decks of this beautiful vessel and experience a glimpse into river life from another era.”

The public celebration afternoon tea will be held at Pioneer Settlement on Wednesday, 17 June 2026 from 1pm to 3pm.
