Swan Hill Rural City Council will commence its annual asphalt heavy patching program next month, with significant works planned across Swan Hill.

Director of Infrastructure, Leah Johnston, said the program delivers long-term benefits for the community.

“Hot asphalt patching provides longer-lasting repairs, creates a smoother ride and improves safety by removing potholes and uneven surfaces. It also improves drainage, reducing future pavement damage.

“While the upfront cost is higher, it reduces the need for repeat maintenance and delivers long-term savings,” Ms Johnston said.

Works are scheduled to begin later next month and are expected to be completed by May as part of Council’s routine road maintenance program.

Asphalt heavy patching involves removing damaged sections of pavement to a consistent depth using specialised machinery, eliminating cracks, rutting and surface defects to create a stable base.

“Once prepared, hot asphalt is laid and compacted at high temperature, allowing it to properly bond with the existing pavement and restore the road’s shape and strength.

“This differs from the cold mix patching used for temporary day-to-day repairs. Heavy patching with hot asphalt is a permanent solution that extends the life of the road surface,” Ms Johnston said

The asphalt used is sourced from a processing plant in Maryborough and contains at least 10 per cent recycled materials, including reclaimed asphalt pavement. It may also include recycled glass and soft plastics.

Residents may notice markings on the ground where patching is scheduled to take place, key locations for asphalt patching include:

  • Stradbroke Avenue (between McCallum Street and White Street)
  •  Rutherford Street (between High Street and Splatt Street)
  • Coronation Avenue (between Gray Street and Wattie Street)
  • Murlong Street (at the school crossings)
  • Campbell Street (between Rutherford Street and Curlewis Street)
  • Werril St (around the Coronation Ave intersection)

Residents may experience short-term disruptions while works are underway. Council appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation and reminds motorists to observe all traffic management signage to ensure the safety of road users and work crews.
