Apply for a memorial or interpretive board

Council recognises the importance of commemorating loved ones and significant events in public spaces.

To ensure safety and suitability, all memorials on roadsides, parks and reserves require Council approval.

Important information

  • All costs associated with the memorial are the responsibility of the applicant
  • Memorials may be relocated or removed if required for safety or future works
  • Council does not guarantee the lifespan of memorials

How to apply

Online

Step 1.Do your research

Before applying, review Council’s requirements for memorials, including location, safety and design considerations.

Memorials must be suitable for public spaces and must not impact road safety, infrastructure or maintenance.

Step 2.Make sure Council is the correct authority

Council can only assess memorials on land it manages. If the proposed location is on a road managed by another authority, you will need to contact them directly. Find out more about who is responsible for our roads.

Step 3.Choose suitable locations

You will need to provide proposed locations for the memorial. Locations must be safe, accessible and not interfere with traffic, pedestrians or maintenance activities.

Step 4.Gather supporting documentation

When applying you will need to include:

  • Type of memorial (e.g. roadside memorial, tree, plaque or interpretive board)
  • Proposed wording (if applicable)
  • Reason for the memorial and its local significance
  • Preferred location(s)
  • Letters of support from immediate family (where relevant)

Step 5.Allow enough time

Assessment timeframes may vary depending on the proposal and location. Submitting a complete application will help avoid delays.

What happens next?

Once your application is received, Council will assess it against safety, location and community considerations.

You may be contacted for additional information during the assessment process.

If approved, Council will provide details on installation requirements, costs and next steps.
