Since 1996 FONVP have worked to protect and enhance Nyah Vinifera Park & Mid-Murray River red gum & Black box floodplain forests, lakes and wetlands. Wati Wati Country.

Why we formed?

In 1996, imminent logging of the red gum wetland forest led the community to gather to object and fight to get the State Forest upgraded to a park. It took 15 years, but we did it. Participating in a VEAC process and joining with other conservation groups in Vic and NSW to protect public red gum forests along the Murray River. More recently we have engaged with the Living Murray and Murray Darling Basin Plan processes and fought for a fair water allocation to floodplain forests like Nyah Vinifera Park.

What we have done?

We have successfully lobbied for better management of the Park for nearly 30 years, standing with Wati Wati and First Nations community to protect the precious Cultural Landscape. Our perserverence, professionalism and dilligence has stregthened our ability to advocate to all levels of Government and build community networks.

Flora and Fauna

Murray Darling Carpet Python, Regent Parrot and other threatened species need habitat like the floodplain forests to ensure survival, particularly with the threat of  changing climate. One of the big threats is loss of habitat and illegal firewood cutting. We lobby for better management and more Rangers to police this theft.

Activities

We actively engage in restoring and preserving the environmental and cultural values in the Park. We support co-management aspirations of Wadi Wadi Traditional Owners.
