Swan Hill Rural City Council is taking proactive steps to address community concerns regarding residential properties being used as rooming houses without the appropriate permits.
In January, Council officers undertook a series of compliance inspections across properties identified through community reports which has resulted in a number of properties since becoming compliant.
Council’s Director Development and Planning, Michelle Grainger said the safety of residents and the broader community remains Council’s top priority.
“Rooming houses must meet strict safety and regulatory standards to ensure the wellbeing of occupants.
“Where properties are found to be operating without the appropriate approvals, Council has a responsibility to act - not only to enforce regulations, but to ensure basic safety measures are in place,” she said.
Ms Grainger acknowledged the important role the community has played in identifying potential issues.
“We appreciate the community bringing these matters to our attention. This has enabled Council to respond promptly and work constructively with property owners to achieve compliance,” she added.
Community members who have concerns about a property potentially operating as an unapproved rooming house are encouraged to submit a request through Council’s online building investigation form.
Council remains committed to maintaining community safety and ensuring all residential properties meet the required regulatory standards.
