Swan Hill Rural City Council is pleased to announce that works on the Karinie Street Reconstruction Project will commence in the first week of March 2026 with completion anticipated by the end of 2026.
Council’s Director Infrastructure, Leah Johnston said that this major infrastructure upgrade would see the full reconstruction of Karinie Street from the Nyah Road roundabout through to west of Murlong Street.
“The project includes significant road rehabilitation works, upgraded drainage, construction of a new footpath along the southern side, and a shared walking and cycling path along the northern side.
“The first stage of works will occur between the Nyah Road roundabout and Saleyards Road, on both the northern and southern sides of Karinie Street. Construction will generally take place on weekdays between 7am and 5pm.
Ms Johnston said that while Council is committed to maintaining access wherever practicable, some disruption is unavoidable due to the scale of the project.
“Temporary traffic management measures will include reduced speed limits of 40km/h, periodic single-lane closures along Karinie Street, and traffic controllers on site to assist motorists and pedestrians.
“For the safety of workers and the community, Council respectfully asks residents, motorists, visitors, business operators and patrons to avoid parking on the road or nature strip during construction hours, keep children and pets well clear of work zones, consider alternative parking arrangements if required, and comply with all signage and directions from traffic controllers,” she said.
“We recognise the importance of maintaining business continuity throughout construction, particularly given Karinie Street’s critical role in servicing the saleyards and surrounding industrial precinct. Ahead of works commencing, directly impacted businesses have been proactively engaged through letter drops and face-to-face discussions to understand and plan for access needs - including driveway staging, delivery scheduling and heavy vehicle movements,” Ms Johnston added.
Ms Johnston encouraged business operators to plan ahead for deliveries and engage early with the contractor or Council representatives should advance notice, coordination or support be required.
“Taking a proactive approach will help minimise disruption and ensure operations continue as smoothly as possible throughout the works,” she said.
The Karinie Street Reconstruction Project represents a significant investment in the safety, accessibility and long-term performance of this vital transport corridor.
The Australian Government has committed almost $5 million toward the project through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.
Council appreciates the community’s cooperation and patience during construction and looks forward to delivering a safer, more efficient and future-ready Karinie Street for all road users.
